||In the 1950s, an average of 2,523 spring Chinook returned annually to the Klickitat Subbasin; however, from 1977 to 2003 annual returns decreased to an average of 1,900. The subbasin supports winter and summer steelhead and historically provided a significant fishery. From 1987 to 2003, average escapement of was less than 300 fish. To restore these species, we are improving habitat and conducting research and monitoring of steelhead populations to evaluate the need for hatchery supplementation/reintroduction. Coho and fall Chinook are produced to mitigate for lost harvest opportunities, while limiting/avoiding impacts on non-target species.
